Birds and flying insects are some of the most visually striking creatures we encounter every day. Six of what are considered the 10 most colorful animals around the world are birds. Although we find their colors pleasing to see, coloration is more about communication and critical for the survival of the species. For both birds and flying insects, bright colors often signal health, vitality and genetic quality or simply identify their own species when attracting or searching for a mate. An insect’s coloration can also serve as a signal to predators they are toxic or perhaps unpalatable, while some simply serve as camouflage when hiding from predators. Regardless of the purpose, their coloration is another beautiful contribution to our time outdoors.
This Gallery is no attempt to catalogue the vast number of birds and flying insects we share the planet with. It is simply to share a tiny portion of some of those we encounter often, taken for granted perhaps, that illustrates the beauty and color found around us.
